His leaD role as a cancer patient in 50/50 made people really stand up and notice Joseph as an actor. Most people knew him before, most probably as the star of 3rd Rock From The Sun, but now he is viewed as one of the actors to watch in Hollywood. He has had a few really strong roles including The Lookout and Inception. Despite his success as an actor he has told reporters that he has always had a burning desire to direct.
"I was a child actor for years and quit at 19, went to school awhile, and a big part of why I came back was that I ultimately wanted to make movies," Gordon-Levitt said. "I spent a year working with Chris Nolan, Rian Johnson, Steven Spielberg, and I did my best to pay attention. I've also been making short films for a long time now, I've directed a ton of them, and that is a huge part of why I feel comfortable and confident in this."
He is now probably bracing himself for the challenge of both directing and starring in the film, which no doubt will have its hard moments. He has also written a role for himself, which I suppose some people will criticize him for. "This is the first time I finished a feature film I thought was good enough to make into a movie..I wrote myself a helluva role, one that people wouldn't necessarily thought of me for."
They have financing sorted out, and shooting is due to start in April. Joseph was supposed to have a small supporting role in the upcoming Quentin Tarantino film, Django Unchained but now with his new movie he may have to pull out of that one.
I am really impressed with Joseph, he is clearly a very talented man and I think we haven't even seen the best of him yet. I'm really looking forward to hearing more about his new directorial debut as more details emerge.
