Things continue to go from bad to worse for Gary Busey. The Associated Press is reporting that Busey has filed for bankruptcy, listing more than $500,000 in personal debts and less than $50,000 in assets. Read on for more details about the veteran actor.

Gary Busey may have peaked in the 90′s, but it is still sad to him in this state. He got his first big break when Barbara Streisand hand selected him for a role in the 1976 film, A Star is Born. Then in 1978 he was nominated for an Academy Award for his role as Buddy Holly in The Buddy Holly Story. From there, his career sky-rocketed, culminating in the 80′s and 90′s with roles in Point Break, Lethal Weapon, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and many, many more.
However, things took a turn for the worse after that. 1988 saw Gary suffering head injuries in a motorcycle accident. The 90′s and early 2000′s saw him getting into trouble with the law – cocaine, assault and failing to pay rent. He “starred” in some obscure films (for example, a Turkish Nationalist film Valley of the Wolves: Iraq) and some voice-overs for random video game characters. Things seemed to pick up a little in 2007 when he made an appearance on Entourage, but the role really just gave more attention to the poor turn his life had taken. Most recently, he has turned to reality TV shows – Celebrity Rehab with Dr Phil and Celebrity Apprentice.
Now he has filed for bankruptcy. Of course, bankruptcy is not uncommon and can sometimes indicate a re-invention or a fresh start. This is exactly the story Busey’s manager Ron Sampson is spinning, writing in a statement that the filing provides Busey “a new and clear path” to personal and career success.
I hope, for Gary’s sake, that this is true and that he does find a new path and hopefully a return to his glory days.
